HONORS THESIS REQUIREMENT

Dr. R.Wes Leid, Senior Honors Faculty FellowAn Honors thesis is the hallmark of a quality Honors education and is a common feature of the finest Honors Colleges in the nation. This graduation requirement provides all students the opportunity to design a unique project that will become both the culmination of their undergraduate experience and a bridge to their future careers.

Students in the Honors College complete a three-credit project which includes:

Thesis presentations typically take place during the seventh week of each semester. All presentations are held in Honors Hall.

FAQ ON HONORS THESIS

Every student identifies a faculty member who serves as the thesis advisor and mentor. This advisor assists the students in developing, writing and presenting the thesis proposal and final paper. (Information for faculty thesis advisors may be found here.) Students may choose among several options to complete the Honors Thesis (UH 450) including:

In all cases, a significant piece of writing that places the project in an academic framework is required. The final paper must address a research question which forms a bridge between published scholarship in a discipline and the student's personal experience or research.

There is no class associated with the Honors Thesis. Instead, students register for 3 credits under an Honors course number. The course number will vary depending on which type of project is completed. Registration for these credits will not take place until a project proposal has been completed and submitted to the Honors College for approval. Deadlines for submission of proposals are as follows:

  • July 10th: the deadline for students to submit proposals for projects that will begin in the fall semester.
  • November 10th: the deadline for students to submit proposals for projects that will begin in the spring semester.
  • April 10th: the deadline for students to submit proposals for projects that will begin during the summer.

Contact the Honors College (335-4505) to obtain more information or set up an advising appointment if you have further questions. Sophomore students will be invited to information meetings where the thesis requirement will be discussed.

You are invited to come to the Honors College to look at completed theses. They are available in the Honors Reading Room and are filed by college.

Examples of recent theses that have received "Completion with Distinction" from the Honors Council can be downloaded in a PDF file. A list of theses that received Completion with Distinction (beginning with Fall 2001) is also available.
