PRÉCIS
FOR HONORS THESIS*

Effective September 1, 2003
This piece of writing
should be done when the body of your Honors thesis is complete. Most importantly,
this section should be written in language that educated academics outside
of your discipline could understand. The goal of the précis is
to inform the readers as to what you did in your thesis. This information
should include: the problem, question or hypothesis examined; an explanation
as to why you decided to study this problem; the approach you took in
solving the problem; the procedures you used; what you discovered; and
where others might go in this area in the future. The précis
should be informative and written in language the educated, academic reader
would understand.
Statement of Research
Problem, Question or Hypothesis
What is the research problem, question or hypothesis? Why were you interested
in this area of research? What is the background to your quest? Why is
this question important in light of the state of the discipline in this
area?
Context of the
Problem
Where does this problem fit in the context of the larger picture of the
field? Is there some historical/social/cultural/scientific context that
you consider very important for understanding this problem?
Methods and Procedures
What basic methods and procedures did you use to address or solve the
problem, question or hypothesis? Were the methods conventional for your
field? Did you use innovative methodology to solve your problem, or did
you use old methods in a new and innovative manner? Did you have problems
with the methods you chose? How did you solve these problems in methodology?
Findings
What were your findings? What do your results mean? What did you learn?
Did your research delve into the problem in sufficient depth? Were the
methods used appropriate to answering your questions? Did you have problems
analyzing the information collected? What does your work ultimately mean?
Conclusions
How do your results compare or contrast to other results in the field?
What did you learn from your research? What is the next step in this research?
Do you have suggestions for future research?
All of this information
must be presented in two double-spaced pages using a 12 pitch font. Therefore,
you must write succinctly and clearly.
