STUDY ABROAD

The Honors College considers study abroad an important aspect of education and provides students with many excellent opportunities for international education. Study abroad challenges notions about other peoples and countries, deepens and enriches the intellectual experience, and creates an awareness and understanding of diversity and difference. We strongly urge all students in the College to engage in an education abroad experience.

Students have several options available regarding study abroad.

  • A typical experience involves registering for classes for one or two semesters at a university in another country through a program of study organized by another university or independent program provider such as the International Student Exchange Program, the Institute of European Studies, and the Council on International Educational Exchange. If organized by a program provider, students pay the program a fee to cover tuition, housing, excursions, and other expenses.

  • Some programs involve "exchanges" which means that two universities agree to exchange a selected number of students. Exchange students pay WSU tuition and fees while attending a host university making Study Abroad possible for approximately the cost of studying at WSU. The Honors College has exchange programs in Denmark and Wales which are specifically developed for Honors students, but Washington State University has many other exchanges as well. This summer, WSU Honors students will attend the University of La Serena in Chile on a special Honors exchange arranged by Assistant Dean Jessica Cassleman.

  • You can also participate in a "guided study tour" led by an Honors faculty member which satisfies a course in the Honors College curriculum. Prof. Kim Andersen is leading such a tour to Denmark, Norway and Sweden next summer (2006). (Contact Prof. Andersen at 335-7694, kimander@wsu.edu; www.wsu.edu/~kimander for more information). Other trips are also being planned. Contact the Honors College for up-to-date information.
  • Students may also choose to complete an "internship" or participate in a "service learning" programs. Service Learning integrates classroom and service-oriented community involvement, often in rural or remote areas. There are also Student Teaching study abroad positionsoffered through the WSU College of Education.

Current Honors College students who are now involved with a Study Abroad experience or have recently completed one:

It is recommended that you meet with an Honors advisor very early in your academic career if you are interested in completing the requirements for the Certificate of Global Competency.
