Hello
from the Turks/Caicos!
Wondering
where that is? A bit north of the Dominican Republic, right in the area
of the Bahamas, sits my little island South Caicos, home of 1,000 people
and 14 churches. Most of the people here are conch and lobster fishermen,
with the exception of the 14 pastors and various fin fishermen. Hence
the town is pretty poor, but has a great feeling of "home" to
it, where everyone knows your name. The School for Field Studies center
is placed smack dab in the middle of town, right on the waterfront, so
the students almost have no choice but to mingle with the locals. The
local theorist Phil comes by every morning and stands at our door, waving
at whomever comes by, to tell them his new and interesting insight into
the relationship of nuclear physics and the patterns on the bottom of
his shoe. I am participating in a month long summer course, so all of
the learning is done in the first two weeks and all the research is done
in the second two. Now we are going out to the reef four times a day to
do transects, either snorkeling or scuba, and come back pretty exhausted
to great food and inviting beds. Breakfast is early here, but thats just
as well as it gets pretty warm as soon as the sun is up. Because of the
lack of fresh water on our flat island we only get one freshwater shower
a week, but we seem to get by with our shampoos in the ocean. The locals
look at us a bit strangely as we run down in our little gaggles with our
shampoo in one hand and razors in the other. However, all in all I am
having an amazing time, learning bunches and soaking up the sun whenever
I have a free minute. Cya all back in the fall!
