Schuck: Study Abroad in Spain
The year I spent in Seville, Spain was one of the best and hardest years
of my life. I had experiences I didn't know one could experience, faced
difficulties I hadn't prepared for, and I learned things about myself
I never thought I'd discover. Although the statement sounds cliché,
the only other way to understand is to experience it for oneself. From
the beginning, I tried to live the Spanish life and restrict myself to
speaking only Spanish. Unlike many Americans around me, I truly embraced
the concept of ''when in Rome, do as the Romans, and was able to reach
my goals of growing to truly understand the Spanish culture (or rather,
the culture of Andalucía) and becoming conversationally fluent
in Spanish. These 'achievements', however, were hardly of all my own doing.
By the grace of God, I was 'adopted' into a Spanish family, made some
very close friends (both American and Spanish) and even had a marvelous
experience traveling solo around parts of Europe. I enjoy being back in
my own culture and at WSU, but my parting words to my friends still ring
true: "he dejado la mitad de mi corazón en Sevilla."
I've left half of my heart in Seville.
