TEAM RESEARCH

A team research project is most appropriate when pursued within the thesis guidelines (see UH 450 and 451). The major difference between a regular research thesis and a team research project is that the team approach encourages you to work collaboratively on both the research and preparation of the final paper. This is excellent training for future career or workplace settings which might require that you have the ability to work with one or two other people to design a project. This option will require that you learn how to successfully divide the work that must be accomplished between the team members and prepare a final paper which summarizes this work.

The challenges inherent in a team research project are obvious. You must locate at least one other student who has a similar research or project interest and with whom you believe you will be able to work collaboratively. You will also need to find a faculty member who will agree to be the supervisor for this project.

Examples of previous team research projects include a comparison of animal care techniques at two North American zoos and development of an extramural recreation program at a local high school. In both cases, two or more students designed a project which involved a division of labor and was approved by a supervising faculty member.

The proposal for this option is much like the proposal for any other project with one important exception - the contribution of each team member regarding the work or research must be clearly identified in your proposal to the Honors Thesis Review Committee. When your research or project is completed, your final report must also clearly indicate the contribution of each of you to the project and to the research paper.

The supervising faculty member must receive a bound copy of the final paper, and two bound copies must be submitted to the Honors College by Monday of the week prior to your scheduled oral presentation.
