Beardsley Family Foundation
Honors
Veterinary Medicine Scholarship Three
members of the Beardsley family attended Washington State University.
Warren Beardsley and Kim Beardsley Vonhopffgarten both were in the Honors
College. They have a great interest in animal life, especially of horses
and equestrian matters.
Criteria
For Scholarship:
- Student must be
currently a participant of the Honors College Accelerated Veterinary
Medicine program
- Student must be
in good academic standing with the Honors College Accelerated Veterinary
Medicine program
- Student must have
an interest in working in a large animal veterinary practice
- Preference to
residents of the state of Washington
- Preference to
students with demonstrated financial need

Sidney
R. Buckley and Daughter Honors Scholarship
Jody
R. Buckley of Menlo Park, California, is a Benefactor of Washington State
University and the University Honors College. She is a 1987 WSU graduate
who majored in English and was part of the Honors College. Ms. Buckley
established a scholarship endowment for the Honors College dedicated to
her father, Judge Sidney R. Buckley, of Kettle Falls, Washington. Judge
Buckley is a 1947 WSU graduate of the Political Science Department. Scholarship
recipients are designated as Buckley Scholars.
Criteria

- Grew up in a rural
area in Eastern Washington
- Possess some financial
need

Can Do Minigrant
Peter Rothschild,
and his spouse, Lynne Flaherty’s avocation is raising and showing horses.
The initial gift for this purpose was provided in memory of “Can Do,”
Peter and Lynne’s foal. After the foal’s death, they chose to establish
this award to provide additional learning opportunities for students enrolled
in the Honors College Accelerated Veterinary Medicine program at Washington
State University. Lynne and Peter’s desire is to help WSU students who
share their passion for horses.
Peter, an Honors
College graduate, received his degree from WSU in 1970 in Political Science.
He went on to receive his law degree and practiced law until he took over
the family business, Featherspring, International Corporation. Peter has
actively contributed his time and resources to the Honors College as a
member of the original Honors Visiting Committee, as a current member
of the Honors Advisory Board, and as a President’s Associate to the Honors
College.
Lynne C. Flaherty,
MD, graduated from UC Davis in 1980 in Mathematics. She went on to receive
her MD from UC San Francisco and then did a Surgical Residency with the
University of Washington. She now practices Emergency Medicine in Quincy
and Moses Lake.
Peter’s involvement
with horses began at age five and Lynne’s horse romance started at age
twelve. In 1992, they moved to a small farm in Woodinville and began raising
horses as T, S & M Associates.

Eugene and Linda Voiland Engineering
Honors Scholarship Gene
Voiland graduated with honors from Washington State University with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. His motivation for creating
this scholarship is to encourage someone who is not at the absolute top
of his/her class to strive to achieve higher objectives. He wants to help
someone unleash some inner potential that may not yet be apparent. He
received some of this motivation from his professors and experiences at
WSU and wants to give something back.
Criteria

point average in the 75th percentile of students majoring in engineering
(the quartile below the top quartile)

Frank
and Diana Kirkbride Endowed Honors Scholarship
As 1969 Washington State University graduates, Frank and Diana Kirkbride
like and understand the unique campus environment of the Pullman campus.
Frank holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Landscape Architecture)
while Diana has a Bachelor of Arts in Education with High Honors. Her Honors
program experience has had a lasting impact on her education, career and
life. Frank’s development business with its focus on small communities
and the human environment testifies to his awareness of the value of WSU
as a premie r residential university. Diana’s career as a kindergarten
teacher with North Thurston Public Schools demonstrates an understanding
of the importance of teaching and learning. Their son David is a 2000 Management
Information Systems and Washington State University Honors College graduate.
The Kirkbride family understands the transformational vision for the Honors
College that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, melds teaching and
research, and stimulates innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. Recipients
shall be given the title “Kirkbride Fellow.”
Criteria for Scholarship:
• Demonstrated leadership capacity
• Citizenship
• Capabilities in their chosen field, as well as financial need.
• Students must have demonstrated financial need and qualify for Federal
Student Aid as provided for by the FFEL or Stafford Loan program. Students
cannot be receiving Pell grants or Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunities
Grants. Alternatively, qualified students are those with a demonstrated
total family income between 75% and 125% of the Median Household Income
for Washington State as published by the Washington State Office of Financial
Management.

Leff
Family Education Abroad Scholarship
The Leff family moved
to Pullman in 1965. Dr. Wenzel Leff has been a pillar in the medical community
in the Palouse since his arrival. The Leffs are highly regarded in Pullman
for their commitment to health, education, and community development.
Dr. Leff and Mrs. Julanne Leff have a heartfelt belief that the WSU Honor
College provides the finest education in the world and encouraged their
children to attend WSU and participate in Honors.
Lori Leff Mueller
graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in English. She received the S.
Town Stephenson Award and the Director's Award, the two highest awards
given to graduating seniors in Honors. As an undergraduate she studied
abroad at the University of Cardiff, Wales. She earned her law degree
from Harvard.
Julie Leff Kouhia
graduated cum laude with a B.A. in English. She studied abroad at the
University of Stirling in Scotland. She earned a masters degree from the
University of Washington and an MBA from UCLA.
Amy Leff Knapp graduated
cum laude with a B.A. in communications. She studied abroad at the University
of Wales, Swansea. She was a member of Crimson Company show choir and
Phi Beta Kappa.
The Leff family chose
to establish this endowment because their children benefited from their
education aborad experiences and in order to provide financially needy
Honors students with the opportunity to study abroad.

Lewis and Sarah Lee Scholarship
Lewis, a 1988 Washington
State University graduate, received degrees in both Electrical Engineering
and Business while in the Honors College. Additionally, he earned a Law
Degree from George Washington University in 1991. Lewis’ spouse, Sarah,
is a 1989 Washington State University graduate who earned her degree in
Recreation and Leisure Studies.
Upon earning his
JD, Lewis returned to Spokane to work for the patent and trademark law
firm of Wells, St. John & Roberts. In 1995, he went on his own with
a former colleague, Dan Hayes, to form the firm Lee & Hayes. Lewis
and Sarah are raising four future Cougars: Jordan, Brendan, Lindsay, and
Julian. Lewis’
sister, Lori Lee Williams (’82 CAHE, ’89 MBA), brother, Larry, brother-in-law,
Glenn Williams (’82 CBE), and Sarah’s brother, John Modisett (’82 CBE),
all attended Washington State University.

M.E. and Maxine Johnson Honors
Scholarship Manford
“Buzz” (CAHE ’49) and Maxine (CBE ’48) Johnson of Bigfork, Montana, have
enjoyed a long and meaningful relationship with Washington State University,
beginning with their experience as students on the Pullman campus and
continuing throughout their respective careers in business and higher
education. Maxine was first elected to the board of the Washington State
University Foundation Trustees in 1993, serving with distinction as a
member of the board’s Gift Acceptance Committee. In addition, the Johnsons’
are Benefactors to WSU. The Johnsons’ commitment to student access to
higher education, combined with their strong desire to encourage talented
and capable young men and women to maximize their potential through challenging
and enriching curricula, resulted in the establishment of an endowed scholarship
fund in the Honors College.

working toward a degree either on a WSU campus or abroad

Ryan-Bornander
Scholarship

Pat Anderson and Mary Wack, Dean of the Honors College
Elma Ryan Bornander
(Pat) Anderson graduated summa cum laude from Washington State University
in 1941 with a degree in Speech (now Communications). While attending
college, she met Edwin (Eddie) Bornander, also a 1941 honors graduate,
and they were married in 1942. Shortly thereafter, Eddie, a ROTC graduate,
was called to the European theater of World War II and was killed in action
in Italy, November 1943.
Pat’s professional
career included four years as a Program Director for the American Red
Cross in the South Pacific during the war, and later as an Administrative
Officer for the Veterans Administration Neuropsychiatric Hospitals. She
served for a number of years as State Executive Director of the National
Association for Mental Health.
In 1958, Pat married
Paul V. Anderson. Paul was a Whitman College graduate and a teacher, coach,
dean of men, army officer, and VA Administrative Officer during his career.
He died of cancer in 1975.
For more than fifteen
years, Pat served as a voluntary Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)
for the King County Superior Court System. As such, she represented abused
and neglected children as their guardian ad litem in court proceedings.
In additional support of these programs, she has created an endowment
to meet special needs of these children. Pat also volunteered as a Probation
Officer for Seattle Municipal Court and as a Disaster Service Caseworker
for the American Red Cross.
Her interest in education
has led her to establish endowments for community college honors students
on their way toward four-year undergraduate degrees and for high school
students interested in the arts. The Elma Ryan-Bornander Fund was created
because of Pat’s paramount interest in making a high-quality college education
available to serious and motivated students.

Scholarships may
be renewed annually until the student’s graduation, assuming the recipient
continues to meet the criteria.
Phi Beta Kappa Scholarships
Founded in 1776,
Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious academic honorary society
in the United States. It recognizes and encourages excellence in learning
in the liberal arts and sciences. The Gamma of Washington Chapter of Phi
Beta Kappa located at WSU has two scholarships: the Sidney G. Hacker Phi
Beta Kappa Scholarship and the Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship that it supports
and awards each year. Scholarship recipients must be WSU Juniors and Seniors
majoring in the liberals arts, sciences and economics. Students must have
a high GPA and show financial need. The scholarship committee of the Gamma
Chapter accepts applications each Spring and then interviews and selects
the recipients.
