GLEAM: Growing LEArners through Mindsets

Information for High School Administrators

Who will be involved?

  • High School students currently enrolled in algebra, geometry, or algebra II classes.

What will students do?

  • Students will complete a survey about their beliefs and attitudes, a math tutorial, and take a math quiz. Within the next two weeks, students complete a second math quiz.
  • Participation will take 2- 2.5, spread across 2.5 class periods.

Why is this important?

  • Research has shown that students have either more of a fixed mindset or a growth mindset
  • Students with a fixed mindset believe that they cannot change how smart they are, whereas students with more of a growth mindset believe they can improve their intelligence by working hard.
  • A student’s mindset has an effect on outcomes such as grades in school and standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), as well as anxiety, confidence levels, and the enjoyment students have in learning.

Goal

  • To better understand how mindsets affect students’ learning habits.

When will this take place?

  • Over the next 2 years.

What are the benefits?

  • Research-based intervention for students provided at no cost
  • Reports/information for your school generated from our research
