Adjacent to it is a "mountain" of carefully piled sand said to represent Mt. Fuji. Obviously such meticulously composed works must be tended as intensively as any living garden, being raked and smoothed constantly. The Japanese tendency to maintain traditions of constantly rebuilding ancient constructions is perfectly illustrated here.
