Our favorite stone garden was in the lovely Nanzenji Temple: the "Leaping Tiger Garden," named after the murals in a room opening onto it. Although the temple was converted from a royal villa in 1291, those buildings were destroyed by a 15th-century civil war. The present buildings were erected in the 17th century. It now serves as the headquarters of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism.
