The Daibatsu ("great") Buddha, 437 tons of bronze, is a reconstruction of an even larger statue which preceded it. No great work of art, it impresses through sheer size. The central figure is surrounded with a halo of lesser bodhisattvas. Note the neat piles of fruit offered on the altar: a common sight in Buddhist temples everywhere in Asia. |
