The only multistory ancient buildings we saw in Japan were castles, built to serve as lookouts and fortresses, towering over the surrounding landscape. The Himeji Castle is the most famous and best preserved of these. The present castle was erected in 1580 under Toyotomi Hideyoshi and enlarged 30 years later by Ikeda Terumasa. |
