The Silver Pavlion (Ginkakuji) earns its name by being only slightly less magnificent than the more famous Golden Pavilion. It is not actually covered with silver (though that was once planned), but is another lovely aristocratic retreat. It was built in 1482 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. Like most such buildings, it was later converted into a temple.
