The Horyuji Temple complex in Nara, the first capital of Japan, contains some of the country's oldest buildings. Because of the Japanese penchant for rebuilding and restoring ancient buildings throughout their history, it is difficult for the casual tourist to know exactly what materials date back to c. 800, when the temple was first erected; but we can be fairly certain that the look of the complex is much as it was a thousand and more years ago. |
